Custom Media Console
Share
Karan was looking for a compromise where he could have nice audio equipment in his living room but without it being visible. Many of the media console type pieces of furniture he found for sale either wouldn't fit his space well, or didn't fit his audio equipment well.
I worked with Karan to build something custom! He had a decent idea of what he wanted it to look like and his general requirements and preferences. The media console will house his speakers, receiver, Blu-ray player, and more! It features adjustable shelves, removable feet, cable management slots, and back panels that can pop out for easy access.
He mocked up the design in SketchUp, and once we finalized the plan, we came up with a cut list and took a trip to the local Crosscut Hardwoods (Woodworker's Candy store) to pick out the wood! He liked Walnut, and in particular, the dark pieces of walnut without much sapwood. The carcass and removable feet were made of solid walnut, and the shelves and back panels are made of plywood and were painted black.
With no prior experience, and working together, he learned to use a wide variety of tools including Miter Saw, Jointer, Planer, Table saw, Festool Domino, Drum Sander, and Orbital Sander. He gained an appreciation for how much work goes into making furniture, a confidence in using a variety of power tools, and passion to continue building! He's already planning his next project, this time with the confidence to try it on his own!
