Thuma Inspired Bed

Thuma Inspired Bed

My husband and I built a Thuma inspired queen guest room bed. We made it out of solid cherry except for the large panels of the headboard which is made of cherry plywood. The bed has no hardware, rather the rails interlock in the feet to form a castle joint. The headboard also interlocks into the feet at the front.

Combining end grain and edge grain gave the two tone look where the rails connect to the feet. To give the headboard a little pop, we designed it with a curve and spindles (modeled after Festool dominoes) that vary in height along the curve.

The slats weren't worth making since they are very cheap online and so we just purchased those.

We finished the bed with Osmo Polyx-Oil. We learned the hard way to apply it very light! After the first coat dried, we had put on too much and it could be peeled with your finger nails. We resanded and reapplied the finish but much lighter this time!

It came out beautifully!
